Is anesthesia staff aware of the prices of the medical equipment they are using? [Anestezi Çalişanlari Kullandiklari Medikal Malzemelerin Fiyatlarinin Farkinda mi?]

Objective: anaesthesists,like other clinicians,need to be aware of the costs of drugs,fluids and disposables commonly used in clinical practise. the aim of this study is find out the awareness of anesthesiology department staff regarding the costs of drugs,fluids and disposables commonly used in clinical practise. methods: we conducted a survey on anesthesia staff in two education and research hospitals. the survey conducted 25 questions about the cost of drugs,fluids and disposables commonly used in clinical practise. results: 99 of the 102 participants completed the survey. forty percent of all estimated cost was within 50% of the actual cost and 52% was within 100%. in general,the anaesthetic staff have predicted the cost 31% lower than the range (range: 86% - 137%). the senior anaesthetists group predicted the costs 19% lower (range - % 61-% 79),junior anaesthetists by 38% lower (range - % 86 - % 39),and anaesthetic technicians by 35% lower (range -% 82 - % 137). when three groups are compared,no statistically relevant difference has been found (p>0.05). conclusion: this study shows that many anaethesia practitioners lack sufficient information regarding the cost of commonly used drugs,fluids and disposables.
