ابوعمرو بن العلاء، قاری برجسته قرآن در قرن دوم هجری، در حوزه دانش لغت نیز شهرت زیادی دارد. تحقیق حاضر قصد دارد رابطه بین دیدگاه‌های لغوی ابوعمرو و شیوه قرائت او را بررسی کند. شواهد متعدد نشان می‌دهد که قاری بصره در تعیین معانی واژگان قرآن از ترادف پرهیز کرده و بین واژگانی که عموم اهل لغت آن‌ها را مترادف می‌دانند، تفاوت قائل شده است. این تفاوت‌ها باعث شده است که قرائت ابوعمرو از آیات قرآن با قرائت‌های مشهور میان قاریان تفاوت داشته باشد. علاوه بر این، ابوعمرو نظرات خاصی درباره شمول و دربرگیری واژگان داشته که به طور مستقیم بر شیوه قرائت او تاثیر گذاشته است. به نظر می‌رسد این نوع اجتهادات در قرائت با نظریه تواتر قرائات از پیامبر هم‌خوانی ندارد. با این حال، قرائت ابوعمرو در بسیاری از آیات قرآن با دیدگاه‌های لغوی او مطابقت دارد و بر اساس اصول خود در علم لغت، وجوه خاصی از قرائت را ارائه داده است.
