درآمدی بر مفهوم قانون و دولت در اندیشۀ اپیکوریسم

از آنجا که اپیکور اغلب به‌عنوان فیلسوف داعی به لذت‌گرایی شناخته می‌شود، ممکن است تصور شود که نمی‌توان از او انتظار نظریۀ سیاسی یا اجتماعی داشت. از او آثار کمی باقی مانده است. دشواری تحقیق در خصوص او زمانی بیشتر می‌شود که بخواهیم از امهات فلسفۀ او عبور کرده و در خصوص ابعاد انضمامی حقوقی و اجتماعی آن بحث کنیم. اما اهمیت فلسفۀ اپیکور در تاثیری است که به‌نظر می‌رسد بعدها با بازخوانی فلسفۀ این دوره در سده‌های پس از رنسانس، در شکل‌گیری مکاتب فایده‌گرا و متعاقب آن حقوق عمومی و نظریۀ دولت برآمده از آن داشته است و به‌حدی است که ضرورت بررسی این موضوع را به حد اثبات می‌رساند. فلسفۀ اپیکور، بر اساس رویکردی که به فلسفۀ زندگی دارد و انسان‌ را به زندگی دور از رنج و با اکتفا به لذات کم‌دردسر تشویق می‌کند، در حوزۀ اجتماعی نیز، افراد را به دوری از حوزه سیاسی و تعریف خوشبختی خود، خارج از دسترس دولت فرامی‌خواند. دولت اپیکوری، دولتی کوچک و حداقلی است که بر اساس قرارداد افراد برای آسیب نرساندن به یکدیگر تشکیل می‌شود و این نهادها برساختۀ انسان‌هایی است که اهداف ملموس خاصی را دنبال می‌کنند.
