What is the Real Number of Deaths due to Traffi c Accidents in Our Country?

The aim of this study was to determine the real death rates of cases injured by traffic accidents and admitted to gazi university medical faculty. in this study, in 2006, hospital files and forensic death examination reports of cases injured by traffic accidents occured in ankara city limits and admitted to the gazi university medical faculty adult and pediatric emergency services were obtained from hospital archieves and examined. there were a total number of 1346 cases during this time and thirty nine (2.9%) died in spite of medical interventions. twenty one of the deaths (53.8%) occured in the first day, eight (20.5%) died between1-7 days, ten (25.7%) died between 8-30 days of the admission. in 2006, traffic accidents deaths during transportation to hospital or in hospital were not recorded in the turkish statistical institute data as traffic accidents deaths. therefore, the studies done in hospitals where intensively accept cases injured in traffic accidents may help to obtaine real numbers.
