Non-Muslim doctors and health officials in the Province of Denizli, in the Ottoman era

Purpose: the aim of this study, was to evaluate the names, ethnicity and works of non-muslim doctors and health crew working in the province of denizli, in the ottoman era. materials and methods: religious registry books, ottoman archive records and the news appearing in izmir press were translated and evaluated. results: in the documents we examined, during the classical period, doctors carried out their tasks with the approval of their professions under the supervision of their supervising physicians. after the tanzimat (reform), the meclis-i tıbbiye-i mülkiye (council of medicine) and sıhhiye-i umûmiye riyaseti replaced the supervising physicians’ function. whether their patients were citizens of the ottoman empire or foreigners from other lands, non muslim doctors, carried out their professions freely in accordance with the applicable legislation. conclusion: during the ottoman era, non-muslim doctors who lived in the same cities with muslims, carried out their professions and cured theirs muslim neighbours without caring about ethnicity and religion.
