investigating relationships of the inflammatory degrees of malnutrition and protein quality with risk factors of cardiovascular diseases in hemodialysis patients

Background and objectives: cardiovascular diseases are the most important causes of death in patients with chronic kidney failure, including hemodialysis patients. inflammation is one of the major causes of increased malnutrition. an increase in the concentration of vascular inflammation factors in the blood such as the concentration of serum c-reactive protein is a strong predictor of mortality in hemodialysis patients. in this study, the relationship between the inflammatory degree of malnutrition and protein quality with risk factors of cardiovascular diseases in hemodialysis patients was assessed.materials and methods: this descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study was carried out on 120 hemodialysis patients aged 20–80 y (57.43 ±15.58) in tehran, iran, using simple random sampling. general characteristics and anthropometric indices were recorded. malnutrition-inflammation was assessed using questionnaires and food intake was investigated using  24-h recalls.results: demographic and anthropometric characteristics were not significantly different between groups with heart diseases (p<0.05). no significant correlation was observed between the indicators of malnutrition-inflammation and suffering from heart diseases in hemodialysis patients (p<0.05). no significant relationship was reported between the quality index of dietary proteins and heart diseases (p<0.05).conclusions: no significant relationship was detected between the inflammatory degrees of malnutrition and protein quality and the risk factors of cardiovascular diseases in hemodialysis patients. further studies are highly suggested.
