A Research on Flower Morphology and Pollen Viabilty of Oil-bearing Rose (Rosa damascena Mill.)

This research was conducted to determine the effects of three flowering period (beginning flowering period, mid flowering period and end of flowering period), two storage temperature (+4°c and 25°c) and five storage time (3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 days) on pollen viability of oil-bearing rose (r. damascena mill.) by using chemical (safranine, iki and ttc) and biological (agar plate) tests at suleyman demirel university, faculty of agriculture, department of field crops, isparta, turkey. the number of pollen per anther was also determined in the flowering periods by using hemacytometric method. during the flowering periods, petal number per flower was between 29.3 and 33.3, anther number per flower was between 86.4 and 89.6, stigma number per flower was between 43.2 and 45.2, and pollen number per anther was between 45.000 and 53.000. poen number per anther and pollen viability measured by the chemical and biological tests decreased duration of flowering season. in both storage temperature, polen viability decreased when storagetime increases. the viability of pollen stored at 4 °c was generally higher than at 25 °c during storage time. pollen viability may take several weeks by optimizing the flowering time and storage conditions.
