Investigation of Yield and Grain Quality Characteristics of Maize Landraces of Turkmenistan Origin in Çanakkale Conditions

Maize landraces are important sources of maize genetic diversity and conservation. different researches are carried out in the planning of breeding studies of these populations. in this research, yield and quality characteristics of 9 different local maize populations of turkmenistan origin were evaluated in çanakkale conditions. the research was carried out in the main crop growing season of 2018 in çomu faculty of agriculture farm crop production research and application unit with randomized block design with 3 replications. hido, syinove, 75may75, 72may80, calicio, caraella and reserve varieties were used as standards in this study. plant height, first ear height, stalk diameter, single ear weight, kernel weight in the ear, protein content, oil content and carbohydrate content were measured. according to the research findings, it was found that there were statistically significant differences between genotypes according to all traits except carbohydrate content. the average value of plant height of maize cultivars varied between 174.5 cm and 219.5 cm and first ear height 50.9 cm and 142.5 cm; stalk diameter 12.7 mm and 21.3 mm; ear weight 74 g and 269.9 g; kernel weight in ear 58.1 g and 206.5 g; protein content 8.2% and 11.6%; oil content 3.47% and 5.7% and starch content 64.8% and 72.6%. landraces have higher values than standards for all plant traits. among the grain quality characteristics, it was seen that there was a remarkable differences between landraces and standard varieties for oil content. the results of the study showed that the yield and quality characteristics of the local maize populations of turkmenistan origin were suitable for çanakkale province. it can possible to use these population as a source material for future breeding studies in çanakkale conditions.
