Knowledge Levels about Nosocomial Infections of Nurses Working in A University Hospital

Objective: nosocomial infection, both developed and developing countries, have a high morbidity and mortality and is a major public health problem due to the economic results generated. this research was studied with the purpose of assessing knowledge of nurses, working at university hospital, about nosocomial infections. material-method: the questionnaire form, which is developed by the researchers by means of screening literature, is composed of two sections including questions about the subject. the first section consists of questions related to sociodemographic qualities and work conditions of participants of this research. in the second section, there are questions aiming to determine knowledge levels about nosocomial infections. results: thirty-six percent of the participants expressed that they passed through in-service training program about nosocomial infections. twenty-eight percent of the participants evaluated their knowledge level about nosocomial infections as “good”. in this research group, the mean score of nurses they receive from knowledge questions about nosocomial infections is 39.24±10.87 points out of 100. conclusions: it is expected that nurses are aware of the importance of nosocomial infections and the importance of their role in preventing these infections. the results obtained from this research indicate that nurses do not fully meet this expectation. for this reason, in-service educational programs about taking precautions to prevent nosocomial infections should be organized and continuity of these programs should be provided.
