چکیده    To create pneumoperitoneum at the beginning of laparoscopicsurgery, several gases have been trialled. the mostcommonly used of these gases is carbon dioxide. althoughpneumoperitoneum created with carbon dioxide providesan appropriate area for surgeons to perform laparoscopicoperations, it can also cause several unwanted changesto the peritoneal structure. some of these side-effects areinevitable but some exhibit changes depending on themethod of application. this review was prepared taking intoconsideration the previous experimental and clinical studiesin literature related to the effects on the peritoneal structure ofpneumoperitoneum created with carbon dioxide. the creationof pneumoperitoneum affects the peritoneal environmentand thereby the organism. this effect is caused by increasedintra-abdominal pressure, the local peritoneal destructiveeffect, carbon dioxide absorption and chemical metabolicchanges. it is important to be aware of the effects created bypneumoperitoneum, especially in obese patients or those withconcomitant diseases. with this awareness, it will be possibleto reduce the effects of the undesired changes wrought bypneumoperitoneum.
