In this study, it is revealed that if the functional literacy levels of fifth grade primary students differed according to gender, pre-school education and the socio-cultural distrincts of students’ school. the sampling of the study is 1265 fifth grade primary students from different socio-economic characteristics of 2010-2011 academic year in anatolian side of istanbul. survey method is designed in the study. data are optained via functional literacy scale based on ecological theory and personal information form developped by the first researcher. validity and reliability of the scale is done and total cronbach alpha coefficient is fonud .868 and composed of thirty-two items including three subscales. findings showed that fifth grade primary students’ functional literacy levels differed at significiantly at .01 level according to gender, taking pre-school education and the socio cultural distrincts of students’ schools.
