Thoughts about the quality of nursing care of patients in the operating room and the assessment of anxiety levels

Objective:this descriptive research has been performed with patients who underwent an abdominal surgery to evaluate their thoughts and their anxiety about surgery has been stated. methods:the research has been applied on 150 patients who had an abdominal surgery in university hospital general surgery clinic between 01.09.2010- 30.06.2011. as a medium of data gathering ; personal information forms, good perioperative nursing care scale and anxiety specific to surgery questionnaire have been used. p< 0.05 value has been defined as the line of statistical meaningfulness. results:it has been stated that the average age of the patients is 58.11± 14.97, 63% is male 40% is primary school graduate, 76% is married, 57% is without an annuity and 81% is with a social insurance. among the patients who underwent abdominal surgery, the average score of qualified perioperative nursing care and the grade of anxiety about surgery have been stated as 101±15.5 and 28.5±7.06. according to the research there is no relation between levels of the quality of perioperative nursing care and the grade of anxiety due to an operation. however it has been defined that the average score of qualified perioperative nursing care is statistically higher significantly in patients who are married. it has been stated that getting older, lower education, being retired, and being admitted to the intensive care unit after the operation affect the levels of anxiety due to an operation. conclusion:the operation room nurses should take particular precautions considering the individual differences to increase the level of qualified perioperative nursing care and decrease the grade of anxiety due to a surgery.
