Alienation in Expressionist Painting

The phenomenon of alienation in societies has emerged from economic, political and social conditions and rapid developments in technology. the fact that artists and their art have been influenced by the social conditions from which alienation emerged has become usual day after day. the function of an artist through his/her art in this process has allowed them to think from different perspectives by perceiving the fragmented self of individual in the alienation process with the sensitivity of an artist and helping the individual about understanding their environment, the world and the universe as a whole. the aim of this study aims to present how the phenomenon of alienation is represented in painting, and how and in what ways alienation is represented in expressionism. scanning method was used as the research method in the study. “the night” by max beckmann is analyzed through the iconological method. the focus of the study is on the concept of alienation, the phenomenon of alienation in art, and alienation in expressionist painting.
