   Thoughts of Teachers of Elementary Mathematics and Turkish towards the Formation on Mathematics Terms

چکیده    This study aims to make sure that mathematical terms re-gain meaning through associations by using language in the science of mathematics. the research was conducted in the mathematics and turkish sections of the elementary school teaching department of faculty of education at gazi university. the qualitative data were collected through systematic analysis. an originally symmetrical shape was given to the students, and they were asked to write what the terms on the shape made them feel and think. the data obtained were then analyzed statistically and the expressions that they formed in relation to mathematical terms were compared with t-test and repeated measure of anova test. in consequence, it was found that the students of elementary school mathematics teaching used more materialistic terms than the students of elementary school turkish teaching did. on comparing the mathematics students with the students of turkish in terms of explaining mathematical terms with the concept of society, students of turkish teaching department were found to use these concepts more. the feelings and thoughts held by the prospective teachers trained in the elementary school mathematics and turkish teaching departments were exhibited with this research, and it was concluded that the numerical knowledge and skills they have gained throughout their training in elementary school mathematics teaching department restricted their power of abstract and creative thinking- which is important in communication.
