Information about the Meaning of the Words Miniature and Mural in the Context of the Art of Miniature

While introduced in the publications, turkish and islamic painting art is entitled as miniature on the basis of its counterparts in the west. however, the name of the paintings is said to be mural in the ottoman period. in the publications where miniature and mural words are handled as each other’s equivalent, definitions start with the etymology of these words and in most definitions; even though the extent that these two words refer not to correspond to each other, incoherency in the content is not taken into consideration. in this study, definition of miniature as it is seen in the publications and information about the meanings of the words used in these definitions are discussed comparatively. to what extent the words miniature and mural and the meanings are embodied in correspondent to each other are discussed and the content of the goal to use mural and muralist to entitle the paintings and the painters are talked about is examined. in the study, it was understood that the words miniature and mural don’t meet each other’s meanings. on the other hand; it was understood that the word mural appears as a name which is inclusive while entitling traditional turkish and islamic painting art but insufficient to meet the exact meaning and also the word muralist is in the context of entitling the painters painting western kind of paintings.
