An Investigation of the Relationship Between Traffic Accident and Traffic Control Concerning Speed Limit and Driving under Alcohol

Traffic accident is a huge problem which causes looses of life, injuries and psychological and economical damages both in the world and in turkey. traffic control is one of the most effective solutions against traffic accidents. this study investigates the relationship between the number of traffic controls by police officers and the number of traffic accidents. the findings show that there is a significant and negative but a weak relationship between the number of traffic controls and the number of traffic accidents. however, the relationship between traffic control and traffic accident is only significant for minor traffic accidents not for the fatal accidents. traffic control can explain 5% variance on the total number of traffic accidents and traffic control can explain 6% variance on the number of minor traffic accidents. alcohol and speed controls cannot explain a significant amount of variance on the number of traffic accidents. on the other hand, alcohol controls explained an amount of variance which is very close to the explained variance by whole traffic controls. also, the probability score for alcohol controls in multiple regression tests is close to the alpha 0.05 level. that is why, the effect of alcohol controls on traffic accidents should be taken into account.
