The Applicability of Cognitive Theories in Geography Teaching and Education

|
Geography, trying to explain the relationship between natural sciences and humanities, interaction between them and the resultant spatial terms, has an important role on curriculum. teacher aiming that her students gain some skills in geography education know that she should have knowledge of the feature and usages of various theories, strategies methods and techniques. in this research, applicability of cognitive theories in geography teaching and education is handled with the frame of secondary education geography subject and exemplified. with the aim of determining which cognitive theories a group of geography teachers at secondary education institution uses most, a questionnaire is applied. in consequence of the research. it’s estimated that 52 per cent of teachers use meaningful learning (uiq presentation) most, 24 percent of them learning via discovery, %11,7 per cent of them learning via cognition. in students applications based on teaching principles of cognitive theories, it’s acquired that meaning learning is provided and it’s applicable to geography education.
