چکیده    Purpose: postoperative nausea and vomiting (ponv) is a common complication of general anesthesia. ponv usually occurs postoperatively in the first 24 hours and can cause serious complications. the objective of this study was to determine the frequency of ponv in the first 24 hours, and to present the prophylactic regimen for ponv, in patients who underwent orthognathic surgery material and methods: we conducted a retrospective analysis of 66 patients, to assess the prevalence and possible risk factors for ponv, in patients who underwent maxillary and/or mandibular osteotomies. factors that may have influenced the risk of ponv were analyzed, and these were included: age, gender, use of preoperative sedatives, duration of the procedure, previous history of ponv after surgery, previous history of nausea and vomiting, motion sickness, headache, postoperative pain and opioid use. results and conclusion: the mean age of patients was 22,12 years ranging from 13 to 49 years. female to male ratio of our patient population was 2:1 (22/44). an overall prevalence of ponv was 22,7% (15/66). 33,3% (5/15) of the patients developed ponv more than once in the first 24 hours. duration of the operation (p=0,012) and previous history of ponv (p=0.008) were significant factors for ponv. among patients who experienced ponv were mostly seen in patients who undergone surgical operations lasted 300-359 minutes. in conclusion, among the patients who are candidates for orthognathic surgery, there is a high risk for ponv. prospective studies to determine the relationship between ponv and possible risk factors are needed.
