THE EFFECT OF CHEMICAL DISINFECTION OF GUTTA PERCHA CONES ON THE APICAL LEAKAGE

Aim: the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different chemical disinfection procedures on the apical leakage of gutta percha root canal fillings. material and methods: eighty-one freshly extracted human maxillary incisors were selected and the groups were constituted as follows: group 1: fifteen roots were filled with gutta percha and ah plus. group 2: gutta percha cones were immersed in 5% naocl solution for 1 minute prior to filling then fifteen roots were filled with gutta percha and ah plus. group 3: gutta percha cones were immersed in 5% naocl solution for 5 minutes prior to filling then fifteen roots were filled with gutta percha and ah plus. group 4: gutta percha cones were immersed in 2% chlorhexidine (chx) solution for 1 minute prior to filling then fifteen roots were filled with gutta percha and ah plus. group 5: gutta percha cones were immersed in 2% chlorhexidine (chx) solution for 5 minutes prior to filling then fifteen roots were filled with gutta percha and ah plus. three roots were used for positive control group and roots were left unfilled. three roots were used for negative control group and roots were completely covered with nail polish. evaluation of the apical leakage was performed with computerized fluid filtration technique. datas were analyzed statistically by kruskal wallis. results: according to the results, there were no significant differences among the chx 1', chx 5', naocl 1' ve naocl 5'groups. conclusion: disinfection of gutta percha cones with chx and naocl did not increase apical leakage values.
