SURGICAL MANAGEMENT OF SIALOLITHIASIS OF THE PAROTID GLAND VIA INTRA ORAL APPROACH

Sialolithiasis refers to the formation of stones in salivary glands or ductus of the glands. this condition results in a mechanical obstruction and pain in the glands. most salivary gland stones occur in the submandibular gland (80-90%), parotid gland involvement is rare. we report a case of 22 year old female who was referred to our department with complaints of recurrent swelling and pain of the left buccal region. panoromic radiography revealed a radiopaque mass in the neighborhood of the angulus of the mandible. ultrasonography of the related area revealed a calculated mass (7.9×6.9×4.3mm) in the inferior part of parotid gland. the calculus was removed under local anesthesia via intraoral surgical approach by manipulating the calculus bidigitally.
