THE EFFECT OF DIFFERENT SETTING TIME AFTER APPLICATION OF Ca(OH)2 ON BOND STRENGTH OF ADHESIVE SYSTEMS TO DENTIN

Aim: the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different setting times between application of calcium hydroxide and adhesive systems on dentin bond strenght of adhesive systems. materyal and method: 96 noncarious extracted human third molars were used in this study. occlusal surfaces were removed to obtain flat dentinal surfaces and teeth were mounted into acrylic. specimens were divided into two groups of 48 to test two main group different dentin bonding systems (clearfil se bond, kuraray, japan; opti bond, kerr, italia). main groups divided into four groups (n=12). group i was the control group that only adhesive system was applied. other groups were: group ii, group iii and group iv which were 2, 6 and 10 minute waited between calcium hydroxide and adhesive systems application respectively. calcium hydroxide (life, kerr, scafaty, italy) was applied 2 mm diameter. after, dentin bonding systems were applied, firstly on ca(ho)2 surfaces and than on other dentin surfaces. composite resin restorations (clearfil photo posterior, kuraray, japan) which are 2,5 mm of diameter and 2 mm thick were applied on dentin next to the ca(ho)2 with a special instrument. all products were used according to manufacturer’s instructions. bond strengths were tested and data were statistically analyzed by kruskal wallis and mann whitney u tests. results: there was no significant difference between dentin bond strength of any groups (p>0.05). conclusion: results demonstrated that waiting 2, 6 and 10 minutes for setting of ca(oh)2 after calcium hydroxide application does not effect bond strength of adhesive systems on dentin next to the ca(oh)2.
