Dental caries is a controllable disease on the basis of numerous epidemiological data. however dental caries and periodontal diseases are one of the most important public health issues in many of the countries of the world. preventive dentistry applications started in 1930 espacially with the respect of oral and dental health of 6–11 year old children. especially in developing countries like turkey where preventive dentistry is not yet widespread; inspite of the variety of dental treatments, preventive measures become more important because of the fact that caries and periodontal diseases developing with bacterial dental plaque can not be prevented in children. however, oral and dental health problems imply serious economic and social problems. therefore, preventive precoutions should be taken before losing oral and dental health and treatment services should be directed towards conservative methods. for these reasons, the effectiveness of home and office applications of preventive dental treatment options were aimed to be revised in this review in the light of current clinical studies.
