THE INVESTIGATION OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN OBESITY AND PERIODONTAL STATUS WITH ANTHROPOMETRIC AND BIOELECTRIC IMPEDANCE METHODS

Purpose: recent studies report a possible relationship between the periodontal disease and obesity, increased body mass or body mass index (bmi). this study aims to determine the relationship between periodontal treatment needs and the findings of anthropometric and bioelectric impedance methods. subjects and methods: two-hundred five subjects (90 male, 115 female) between the ages 14 and 70 (mean: 34.80±12.88) participated to the study. height, weight, waist and hip measurements recorded. to determine the periodontal treatment need the community periodontal index of treatment needs (cpitn) scores recorded. the independent samples t test used to compare the groups, the correlations evaluated with pearson correlation test for the continuous and spearman correlation test for the categorical variables. results: the mean cpitn scores were 2.03±0.64); the mean bmi values were 25.69±5.27). the fatness values categorized as heavy with 119.45±26.0. the waist/hip ratio was higher in females than males (p<0.05). positive correlations found between the cpitn and age, bmi, waist/hip ratio and fatness values (p<0. 01). conclusion: in the present study a strong positive correlation between cpitn and high bmi was observed. the bmi and fatness values may be important parameters to be evaluated and controlled in clarifying the relationship between the systemic diseases and periodontitis.
