AEROBIC AND ANAEROBIC MICROBIOLOGIC INVESTIGATIONS OF PERIAPICAL GRANULOMAS

Purpose: to determine microorganisms in periapical granulomas using modern laboratory techniques and to discuss the results in the light of the recent literature. material and methods: specimens of periapical granuloma were obtained by apical curettage from 35 patients, 15 male and 20 female. aerobic and anaerobic microbiologic cultures were performed for each specimen. statistical analyses were conducted on the data that were collected. results: microorganisms were isolated only in 11 of the 35 clinical materials (31,42%). the percentages of the isolated microorganisms were: streptococcus sanguis (20 %), streptococcus anginosus (13,3 %), streptococcus constellatus (13,3 %), streptococcus milleri (13,3 %), propionibacterium acnes (6,6 %), bacteroides capillosus (6,6 %), staphylococcus xylosus (6,6 %), actinomyces meyeri (6,6 %), and candida albicans (6,6 %). conclusion: different types of streptococcus were found to be most common bacteria among the isolated microorganisms. the results showed that some of the periapical granulomas were found to be polymicrobial by nature.
