Prevalence of Tobacco, Alcohol, and Substance use in Kirklareli University Students

Objective: tobacco, alcohol, and substance addiction starts in adolescence and often lasts for life. this study aims to research the prevalence of cigarette, alcohol, and substance use among the students of kırklareli university.material and method: of the 9,698 students studying at kırklareli university for the spring term 2010-2011, 902 were selected using the proportio-nal stratified sampling method. stratification was done by school and class, and students were then selected through basic random sampling.results: the average age of the students participating in the study was 20.9 ±1.8. 45.4% of students smoke, with 34.9% regularly smoking every day. 64% of students had tried alcoholic beverages and 17.1 % use alcohol more than once each week. 10.4% of students had tried using substances at least once in their life, with marijuana (4.1%) and solvents (3.2%) reported as the substances most commonly tried.conclusion: tobacco usage is common in young people at university. the ratio of students who used alcohol and tried substances at least once in their lives, while lower than in western countries, is not insignificant. for the health services that will be provided to the university students it would be appropriate to include the services that would support them to refrain from the drug addiction materials.
