Pediatric Talus Head Fracture: A Case Report

Fractures of the talus bone in pediatric patients are exceptionally infrequent, primarily attributedto the greater flexibility of immature skeletal structures compared to fully developed bones inadults. therefore, limited research exists regarding the long-term outcomes, clinical aspects, andappropriate treatment of these fractures in pediatrics. an eight-year-old male patient presentedwith swelling and pain in his right ankle after falling into a 10-meter well. twelve days later,he sought medical attention and was examined by an orthopedic surgeon. x-ray examinationshowed a fracture in the head of the talus. consequently, the fracture was reduced by opensurgery and then stabilized with two herbert screws. the patient’s progress was monitoredregularly and subsequent imaging studies showed complete fracture healing. within six monthsafter the operation, the patient can resume his sporting activities before injury without anycomplications. injuries to the head of the talus in childhood should be considered as fracturesin the transitional phase. the open reduction coupled with internal fixation aims to decrease theoccurrence of osteoarthritis and malalignment. in such cases, it is recommended to conduct acomputed tomography (ct) scan for comprehensive evaluation and treatment planning.
