The Impact of Social and Cultural Activities on Gaining National Values Measure:Validity and Reliability Study

One of the aims of education in general is to transfer socially accepted values to the next generations and allow them to internalize these values. values education in schools is conducted within a curriculum within all subjects, not as a separate subject. in this context, schools intend to transfer values to students not only in class but also in extracurricular social and cultural activities. many activities such as field trips, competitions, scouting, reading books, seminars, conferences, and camps are carried out within the scope of values education. determining the extent to which social and cultural activities affect the progress of achieving the targeted values is highly important. this study aims to establish a scale for assessing the impact level social and cultural activities performed by primary, secondary, and high school students have on national values within the framework of values education. the research was conducted in istanbul in 2020 with the participation of 769 students. the scale’s kmo value has been determined as 0.944, and the chi-square value has been found significant as a result of the bartlett test. the results of the exploratory factor analysis (afa) show the scale to consist of 20 items and to have 3 factors explaining 63.3% of the total variance. the factor loading values have been concluded to vary between 0.57 and 0.82. the confirmatory factor analysis (cfa) has revealed χ2 = 1.61 and rmsea = .051 and the other fit indices to be nfi = .97, nnfi = .99, cfi = .99, rfi = .96, rmr = .055, srmr = .043, gfi = .90, and ifi = .99. these values show the scale’s structure to have good fit. cronbach’s alpha is .94 for the entire scale, and .90, .91, and .85 for the three respective factors. the scale has been determined to have high reliability and the items included in the scale to have high internal consistency.
