Current economic development-associated new life style has triggered a burden of metabolic diseases throughout the world. in paralel with these there has been a continuing rise in type-2 diabetes mellitus incidence in all countries, presenting a global pandemic of diabetes. according to the report of the international diabetes federation, about 285 million people were suffering from diabetes worldwide in 2009. it is estimated that this will increase to 439 million by 2030, and most increase will involve developed countries. among to the adult population of turkey, the prevalance of diabetes was 7.2 % according to the turdep-1 in 1997, whereas turdep- 2 indicates that this rate has reached to 13.7% in 2010. impaired glucose tolerance was 6.7% in 1997 and reached to 13.9% in 2010. the increase in turkey within 12 years has been 90% which is exceeded the world health organisation targets.
