USING SOCIAL MEDIA AND FAMILY COMMUNICATION: A STUDY ON THE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN ÇANAKKALE

Nowadays, the effect of rapidly increasing social media using on face to face interpersonal communication. at the beginning of communication influenced by social media comes family communication. in this study, it was investigated whether family communication of high school students differ in terms of their social media usage level.. typical situation sampling method of purposive sampling method type was used to determine research sample. the sample of research consists of 714 students of three high schools in different grades in 2013-2014 academic education year. “social media and family communication” scale that has been developed by researcher was used. in the analyses that were made for the internal consistency, cronbach’s alfa value was estimated as 0.84. spss statistical software was used to analyze the data and descriptive statistics analysis methods were utilized. the scale that has 18 items totally consists of 4 factors and the factors explain 52.9% of the total variance. as a result of this study, it was confirmed that there is a significant difference between the students’family communication scores according to duration and frequency of social media using level.
