REPRODUCING THE VIOLENCE VIA MEDIA TRANSMISSION:THE MURDER OF ŞEFİKA ETİK, THE PROCESS OF THE PRESS TO BECOME SIMILAR TO TELEVISION

Being one of the mechanisms that is the main determining factor of the social structure, the media is expanding the area it affects day by day. media makes the aforementioned effect through news stories that it selects from thousand events that we have experienced. as the sociologists suggest, making news is in a sense to fictionalize the reality, instead of drawing the picture of the reality. one of the areas that we can best observe this power is the representation of women in media, especially in violence incidents. in this study, which approaches media’s violence against women within the framework of critical media theories and feminist perspective, the media analysis of murder of şefika etik in october 7, 2011 was carried out. totally 14 local and national newspapers with 69 news items between 7-13 october which were carried the murder issue were analysed. through the way of handling murder, the language and the sembols were used and other results of the study clearly confirm the general statement of critical media theories which states that social realities are constructed through the media and its products. the findings shows how the dominant culture were reproduced social realities through its sembols and relations. the debate that was opened upon the news and the photograph which was given in the subheading of habertürk newspaper is reviewed with qualitative and quantitative content analysis method through newspaper samples that addresses to different ideologies.
