RECEPTION ANALYSIS OF THE EFFECT OF “MUHTEŞEM YÜZYIL” TV SERIES ON HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN THE CONTEXT OF ENCODING/DECODING

Whether messages of the media are read by receptive audience as intended by the media is one of the leading subjects emphasized b both mainstream theoreticians and critical theoreticians. both mainstream communication studies and critical approach placed receptive audience in a passive position for the messages. however, “encoding-decoding”approach developed by stuart hall who is incultural studies traditionhas introduced three different points of views to the positioning of receivers. this approach argued that receivers can read messages in three different ways as dominant,negotiator and opponent, and placed the receiver in a position that can struggle with messages. this study was carried out to determine how the codes in muhteşemyüzyıl (the magnificent century) tv serialare encoded by high school students. in the study in which thorough interviews were made with students, the answers given by students were interpreted based on 3 reading types introduced by hall.
