CHANGES IN MİLLİYET NEWSPAPER ACCORDING TO SPORTS PRESS IN TURKEY FROM 1950 TILL TODAY

This study investigated the development of the sports media in the world and in turkey in its historical process and displayed the transformation experienced in turkey by the help of the reviews of the archives of milliyet newspaper. the results show that the space allocated for sports in milliyet newspaper increased in proportion to the number of pages of the paper in the period of 1951- 2011. it was also seen that space allocated to news related to galatasaray, fenerbahçe, beşiktaş and trabzonspor, known as “four biggest clubs” increased through the years. it was identified that in 1950s and 1960s the papers provided large coverage for news related to sports branches such as wrestling and boxing. the number of sports columns written by columnists also showed an increase in the periods that were investigated. with the development in printing techniques, the sports sections of newspapers have started to use larger photos, more colorful and aesthetic designs in the last 20 years. while photo sections increased in the papers, written sections showed a decrease.
