VALIDITY AND RELIABILITY OF GOOD DEATH SCALE

Background: community responses to death, life and death loaded meanings, culture, belief system, influenced by age and developmental level and individual values. however, a good death is important in all societies. a good death, but also a fundamental human right. for this reason, the most basic needs of terminal patients comfortable, peaceful and painless ending of their lives. aim: the purpose of this study, to evaluate validity and reliability in turkey of the good death scale determine characteristics of the nurses on the concept of good death, developed in 2003 by schwartz and his colleagues. methods: sample of the study formed from 170 nurses working in the tulay akta§ oncology hospital of ege university, ege university medical faculty hospital medical and surgical intensive care wards and department of anesthesiology-reanimation between march and december 2010. patient identifying information form and good death scale used as a data collection tool. it is written permission from the owner of the scale, the nurses, the institution and ethics committee. good death scale consists of 17 questions and has three subscales, first defines psychosocial and spiritual aspects of death (9 questions), the second sub-dimension of mental alertness, communication skills and control of physical functions and definitions referred to as sub-dimension of personal control (3 questions), the third sub-clinical or biomedical aspects of dimension definitions and is called clinical management of death (5 questions). percentage distribution of the data, factor analysis, item-total score correlations and cronbach's alpha coefficient and test-retest reliability, item analyzes were used. results: the scale validity, six experts back into english translation, and has been translated into turkish by the six experts. for the content validity were 15 qualified expert, the analysis revealed that scores of the experts (kw=0.138, p=0.08). good death scale test-retest reliability correlation coefficient, 0.89, and test-retest scores is statistically no significant difference (p> 0.05). it is found that the factor loadings between 0516-0813, the group divided into three factors, 81.24% of the total variance 'explained, and the overall cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.92, the reputation of the scale for clinical control of the sub dimensions 0.88, 0.79, and psychosocialspiritual control for personal control size is 0.82 for found. conclusion: good death scale is a scale with high reliability and validity for the turkish population.
