EXAMINATION OF NEGATIVE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS SEEN DURING BLOODLETTING FROM DONORS WHICH ARE DONATING BLOOD

Objective: this descriptive study was carried out with the purpose of examining the negative symptoms during and afterwards bloodletting and pain during bloodletting in donors which are donating blood. methods: the population of the study was consisted of individuals who are donating blood participating in blood donation campaign conducted in muğla. the sample of the study was consisted of 866 individuals who are donating blood in this campaign and was volunteers to participated to the study. the data were collected between the date 7 april 2010 and 15 june 2010. questionnaire and visual analog scale was used in collecting data. kruskall wallis test, t test, and pearson’s correlation coefficient was used in analysing the data. written consent was obtained from institutions and verbal was obtained from individuals, necessary to study. results: seventynine point seven percent of individuals were in 18-30 age group, 57% were male, 72% were live in cities, 64% were students, 71% were normal weight, 53.9% were donated blood for the first time. adverse symptoms developed in 37.1% of individuals during and after bloodletting. the adverse symptoms improvement rate was higher in women and in individuals with low body mass index. the mean pain intensity was found as 2.61± 1.59 during bloodletting in donors. the bloodletting donors’ gender, age group and body mass index did not affect the pain intensity during bloodletting. the pain intensity was decreased during bloodletting when the duration of professional experience increased of the health care workers. conclusion: individuals who were donation blood are feeling low level pain during the bloodletting. it is important that in approximately 1/3 of blood donating individuals were experiencing negative symptoms during and afterwards bloodletting. donors with low body mass index should be monitored in terms of negative symptoms during bloodletting. bloodletting procedure should be done by healthcare workers who have more experience.
