Determination of Nursing Students' Knowledge Level on Parenteral Interventions

Objectives: this research was conducted to determine nursing students' knowledge level on intradermal, subcutaneous and intramuscular injection. methods: the sample of descriptive research included 2nd, 3rd, and 4th-grade students who received education in the department of nursing in 2017-2018. the study was completed with 131 students. the data were collected using 28-point information form which was prepared by researchers in accordance with the literature to determine descriptive characteristics of the students. results: in the study, 71.8% of the students were female and 35.9% were 4th-grade students. the students' academic grades were found to 2.73 ± 0.40. the mean score is; intramusculer was found to be 4.50 ± 1.28, subcutan 5.37 ± 1.96 and total score was 17.50 ± 3.04. students' mean scores compared to their classrooms that there was found to be no difference between mean scores (p>0.05). it was found that 89.2% of nursing students used airlock technique during the injection, that 80.6% changed the syringe needle before injection and that they best knew the subcutaneous injection on abdominal region by 91.6%. conclusion: it was determined that students had imperfect knowledge on intradermal, subcutaneous and intramuscular implementations. since students' knowledge of parenteral interventions is important for patient safety, it is recommended that educators should give actual information to students about parenteral interventions every year. it is necessary to show the importance given to laboratory applications and increase the use of advanced simulation models in parenteral interventions. educators are expected that current information sharing with more students contribute to nursing education.
