Abstract    polyse-meaning is a common phenomenon in languages that occurs in the wake of semantic expansion, and its prevalence is due to reducing the burden on the memory of speakers. certain steps are required to prove the polysemy of words, which will be explained in this article. the present study is theoretical and interdisciplinary in semantics and quranic studies and was conducted to comparatively examine the semantic evolution of the word “hawa” in the poems of the pre-islamic era and the quran. in this study, we seek to determine the following: 1- what meanings is the word “hawa” and what derivatives are used in pre-islamic poems? 2- with what meanings is the word “hawa” and its derivatives used in the holy quran? 3- in which category of main types of meaning change do the semantic changes of the word hawa fall? and 4- what are the common meanings of the word hawa and its derivatives in the poems of the pre-islamic period and the holy quran? the analyses are presented based on the classifications of semantic changes and the component analysis of meaning, with a chronological approach. the research data were collected in a library manner; in such a way that the word “hawa” was selected from the conceptual domain of love and its roots were traced by referring to the main dictionaries of the arabic language, then its meanings were extracted in 21 verses out of a total of 1389 verses from the poems of the pre-islamic period, from “mufaddliyat al-dabbi” (167 ah), “asma’iyat al-asma’i” (216 ah) and “mu’alqat” and were qualitatively analyzed in comparison with its meanings in the text of the quran. the study and analysis of the data showed that the word air was used in the poems of the pre-islamic period in the sense of falling and descending and also love (love that is accompanied by falling). in the holy quran, the meaning of the word has transformed through guarantee, permission, and metaphor, which has led to the emergence of polysemy. in the study of these semantic transformations, no semantic appropriation and elevation, exaggeration, and reduction were seen in the non-comparative changes of the explicit meaning; but the semantic degradation of the word was noticeable. the semantic component of the vertical movement in the up-down direction in the meaning of taking away with throwing, setting, and destroying, is real and in the meaning of selfish desires, destruction, deception and emptying (becoming) empty is figurative.
