Abstract    background and aim: declining fertility rates and concerns about population aging highlight the need to understand barriers to childbearing. this study aimed to explore the psychological and sociological obstacles faced by young couples in fars province and how these barriers affect their childbearing decisions. findings may inform effective demographic and family policies.method: a qualitative study was conducted using strauss and corbin’s (1998) systematic grounded theory approach. fifteen married individuals under 36 years old, with at least five years of marriage and either no children or one child, were purposively and snowball sampled until theoretical saturation. data were collected via in-depth semi-structured interviews and analyzed through open, axial, and selective coding.results: the core category, “fear of the future, insecurity, and perceived obstacles,” included concerns about children’s futures, parental responsibility, and viewing children as barriers to personal and professional goals. environmental factors such as economic conditions, socio-cultural and political context, social media, others’ experiences, and lack of social support intensified these barriers.conclusion: young couples prioritize life satisfaction, autonomy, personal freedom, and social-professional engagement. in the current cultural and economic context, these priorities lead to deliberate delays in childbearing or substituting it with enjoyable activities and pet care. the findings can guide the revision of demographic policies and reinforce family-centered values.
