Abstract    considering the importance of selecting appropriate irrigation methods to reduce water consumption and improve its efficiency in agriculture, the environmental water footprint (wf) using the life cycle assessment (lca) method, as an indicator for measuring water consumption and productivity throughout all stages of a product’s life cycle, can significantly contribute to evaluating the environmental impacts of different irrigation methods. in this study, to assess the environmental water footprint and water resource depletion in five climates (hyper-arid (ha), arid (a), semi-arid (sa), semi-humid (dsh), and humid (h)) and irrigation methods (furrow irrigation (fi), drip irrigation (di), and sprinkler irrigation (si)), the hoekstra, berger, aware, and pfister indices were used with simapro 9.4 software. for each climate and irrigation method, key indicators including the amount of water consumed, the environmental impacts of water resource consumption, and the sustainability of water resources to produce one ton of wheat were analyzed. the results obtained from the environmental impact indicators of water consumption in wheat cultivation showed that the highest damage to human health, ecosystem quality, and environmental resources was found using the pfister method with values of 0.0014 (daly), 2109 (pdf*m²yr), and 13254 (mj surplus). the water footprint index using the hoekstra method was 3216 (m³), freshwater depletion using the berger method was 1792 (m³), and the water scarcity footprint using the aware method was 125107 (m³) in the ha.si scenario. in the di.sa scenario, due to favorable conditions for increasing yield and reducing input consumption, and in the dsh.si and h.si scenarios, greater utilization of green water resulted in a 50%-60% reduction in the water footprint compared to the average across all evaluated methods. considering performance indicators, water productivity, and direct and indirect footprints, the sa. di scenario was found to be the most sustainable condition for wheat cultivation.
