OUR EXPERIENCE RELATED TO FIRST AID E-LEARNING FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS

Objective: our aim is to share our experience on installing, content preparing and using e-learning system to support first aid training.materials and methods: in this pilot study, a web-based open source learning content management system (lcms) was installed. as content; eleven hands-on trainings and five courses as well as a dictionary for medical terms were prepared. required time for system installation and content preparation were noted. following system testing and registration of students, the website was open to access, and students used the system voluntarily. number of students enrolled, course completion ratio and problems encountered were recorded. participants were invited for a feedback survey.results: required duration for installing the system, preparing videos, creating content for hands-on training and courses were 240 min, 43.5[20-87] min/video, 70 [45-320] and 317 [255-445] min/course respectively. out of 513 registered students, 164 students (32%) used the system. course completion ratio was 97.2 % [65.7-100]. only 27 (16.7%) students participated in feedback survey. majority of the students participated feedback survey reported that they learned the system from their friends, they used their personal computers to connect, and found the system and videos useful and finally evaluated the courses comprehensible. the main points criticized were the lack of technical support, inadequate announcement and unavailability of other courses in the system. conclusion: one third of students used the system despite the low visibility and asked for further courses which indicates a deficit in this area. e-learning requires long preparation, intensive labor, technical hardware, software and financial support. when low number of feedback is taken into account, we believe that the system requirements and student expectations should be well- assessed before preparing e-learning site, and e-learning should be supported by professionally and institutionally.
