Temporary uses: A spark to change existing settings redevelopment through a bottom-up process

The core of regeneration strategies in decaying settings with value is believed to be the activities and uses in such settings. recent redevelopment methods try to approach existing settings using flexible programs and pilot projects as urban catalysts to regeneration plans. the research focuses on new trials of urban catalysts using temporary uses in pilot projects to explore needed activities in deteriorating contexts of value. it investigates tools and methods applied to create a temporal pilot project that is an indicator to existing settings' needs,and that integrate market parties and end users in the generation of redevelopment programs. the paper reviews two private experimental projects: the dutch ndsm experiment as one of the most important temporal spaces in europe,and 'townhouse' gallery in down town cairo,as an independent temporary use experiment. the review of both cases aims to assess temporary uses and bottom-up concepts in generating redevelopment programs.
