موضوع ارتباط عقل و دین با یکدیگر و چگونگی مواجهه باورمندان به ادیان الهی با عقل، از دیرباز مورد بحث و مناقشه گروه‌های مختلف فکری بوده است. چه، ظاهراً از یک سو برخی از متدینان بر این باورند که باید تمام توجه و نگاه خویش را صرفاً به آموزه‌های کتب آسمانی بدوزند و در کنار آن به هیچ منبع الهام­بخش دیگری اعتنا نکنند. چنان‌که از سویی نیز برخی، ادیان و کتب آسمانی را به مخالفت با عقل متهم می‌کنند! هر چند در ادوار مختلف پاسخ‌های درخوری از سوی اندیشمندان مسلمان به هر دو دیدگاه داده شده است؛ لکن در این پژوهش رویکرد امام علی(ع) به‌عنوان یکی از برجسته­ترین پیشوایان و نیز مفسران دین اسلام در این رابطه نمایانده شده است. در پرتو بررسی دقیقی که در کلمات امام(ع) در نهج‌البلاغه و حتی در دیگر منابع صورت گرفته، به‌دست می‌آید که هر دو نگاه پیش گفته، نادرست و نارساست و این امام همام نگاه ویژه و عنایت خاصی به امر تعقل و خردورزی در امور دین و دنیا دارد.
