پرتره یک روش پژوهش کیفی است که از روش های قوم‌نگاری و پدیدارشناسی نشئت گرفته است. این روش به‌دنبال توصیف، درک و تفسیر تجربیات پیچیده انسانی با تکیه‌بر ترکیب آگاهانه ای از ویژگی های مثبت هر دو روش پدیدارشناسی و قوم‌نگاری در راستای ایجاد پرتره های معتبر و دقیق تر از مشارکت کنندگان در پژوهش است. به سخن دیگر این روش به دنبال ترکیب بین داستان‌‌نویسی هنری و دقت علمی در پژوهش است. نخستین بار روش پژوهش پرتره در حوزه آموزش‌وپرورش و رهبری آموزشی به‌کار گرفته شد، ولی امروزه در حوزه‌هایی مانند مددکاری اجتماعی، پرستاری، بهداشت، روانشناسی و جرم‌شناسی نیز کاربرد دارد. بر این اساس مقاله حاضر سعی دارد تا خوانندگان را با ساختار، اصول و کاربرد این روش در حوزه های علوم انسانی و اجتماعی آشنا کند.
