Abstract
objectives: this study aims to explore the potential of traditional architecture in qeshm island as a source of insight for developing energy-efficient and climate-responsive architectural designs in hot and humid climates. the research is guided by broader goals including the preservation of energy resources for future generations, promotion of responsible energy consumption culture, reduction of fossil fuel subsidies, mitigation of environmental pollutants, and the strategic use of local materials and climate-responsive elements.methods: the research adopts an applied methodology, with data collected through a field study conducted on qeshm island. the data collection tools included direct observation of vernacular architecture, review of local literature, interviews with residents and architecture students, and consultations with academic experts. two architectural case studies were selected based on climate relevance: the traditional “mogh” houses of qeshm and the historical urban fabric of laft port. these were analyzed using descriptive-analytical and comparative methods, incorporating modern environmental technologies where applicable.findings: the case studies reveal that traditional architectural strategies in the region—such as the use of wind catchers, central courtyards, controlled openings, and indigenous building materials—effectively contribute to thermal comfort and minimize reliance on fossil fuel-based energy.conclusion: the results underscore that qeshm’s vernacular architecture embodies valuable principles of sustainable and climate-adaptive design. these principles can inform contemporary architectural practices and serve as a localized, effective model for energy-efficient development in hot and humid regions.
