|
This study examines the communicative functions of speech acts performed by users of the social media through updated status. the social media focused in this study is facebook with the assumption that this medium is one of the most popular online social network among the social media users. through this medium,the updates of daily activities have taken place as a routine for an individual to communicate with their social contacts. facebook status is thought of as a personal journal in which people record their everyday activities,events and experience that happens to him or her or to their surroundings on a daily basis and in doing so,the individual/ user would have the tendency to use various acts of speech. thus,the context for updating activity would serve as his or her social network forum and the act of writing a status and updating it is a form of a social action that uses language to execute the act(s) in question. the language used to capture various emotions and feelings,to start a debate or simply to insult or offend someone is a speech act or the speech used to actually do something. thus,this study will employ the content analysis method by drawing upon samples of ‘status posting’ and the subsequent analysis will be based on searle’s speech act framework. it is discovered in this study that the status published does not only point to any specific category of speech acts,but most of the statuses have illustrated a combination of categories in a single status. the categories of speech acts found in the status column in facebook are representative,expressive and directive. this study has shown that any status sent,either in the form of statement,news,quotations or humour,have demonstrated a speech act that is intended to be delivered and shared toegther in their social network. © 2015,jurnal komunikasi malaysian journal of communication. all rights reserved.
