Similarities and differences in the external characteristics of manga and dojinshi caricatures in Malaysia [Manga dan dojinshi Malaysia: Persamaan dan perbezaan ciri-ciri luaran karikatur]

This article attempts to find similarities and differences in external characteristics of manga and dojinshi caricatures in malaysia. in this study,manga refers to japanese comics written in japanese or has been translated to malay and english. dojinshi on the other hand refers to comics written in malay or english by fans of manga in malaysia. a total of 35 dojinshi and 20 manga external characteristics were analysed,such as their costumes,background images,features of the faces,eye sizes,hair styles and other physical caricature characteristics. the hypothesis of this study is that there are significant differences in terms of sketches and caricatures costumes in dojinshi,and the physical aspects of caricatures resemble manga caricatures. this is due to the fact that the affections dojinshi writers have for manga influence them on their manga sketches. the qualitative study uses observation and analysis of selected corpus. the result of the study shows several similarities and differences between dojinshi and manga external characteristics. in addition,dojinshi writers have equally added malay or malaysian cultures in the storylines of dojinshi external characteristics. dojinshi external images has equally been fully influenced by manga,for example characters such big eyes,pointy nose and rose bud mouth,together with sexy clothes and extensive emotion portrayed by running tears and rosy cheeks. malaysian characteristics can be seen through their snub-nosed,whiskered male characters with dark skin,along with veils and clothes that cover most body parts. it can be concluded from this study that dojinshi writers are divided into three categories: writers who fully incorporate external characteristics of manga,writers who include malaysian characteristics and manga in their characters and writers who fully utilized malaysian characteristics in dojinshi. © 2015,jurnal komunikasi malaysian journal of communication. all rights reserved.
