Civil servant facebook privacy management: the influence on usage intensity,self-monitoring skill and organisation privacy orientation [Pengurusan privasi facebook penjawat awam: Pengaruh intensiti penggunaan,kemahiran swaawas dan orientasi privasi organisasi]

Facebook is a favorite medium for majority of social media users,including public servants in malaysia. however,civil servants are now facing the issue of information privacy management of the facebook which are increasingly mixed up between the organization’s information and personal information. this study aims to identify the effects of intensity of facebook usage,self-monitoring skill and organization’s privacy orientation towards the civil servants’ facebook privacy management. a cross-sectional survey was conducted on civil servants serving in the state and federal agencies,and statutory bodies in kedah. a total of 138 respondents which were selected through systematic random sampling participated in this study. the questionnaire consists of four instruments namely facebook intensity scale,self-monitoring scale,organizational privacy orientation scale and facebook privacy management scale. data were analyzed descriptively as means and standard deviations using spss software. while inferential analysis involved the partial least square-structural equation modeling (pls-sem) analysis aided by smartpls 3.0 software. result shows that organization’s privacy orientation and self-monitoring skill give significant influences on the intensity of facebook usage. in addition,the intensity of facebook usage,organization’s privacy orientation and self-monitoring skill also give significant influences on the facebook privacy management. thus,this study describes the role of individual factors and social environment of an organization in determining facebook privacy management. the findings of this study can be used to develop a program to improve the management of online information privacy for the public servants. © 2015,jurnal komunikasi malaysian journal of communication. all right reserved.
