Malay-javanese communication in social media [Komunikasi bahasa melayu-jawa dalam media sosial]

In malaysia,javanese language is still being used by the javanese community in their everyday lives. specifically,javanese colloquial slang known as “ngoko” is widely practiced. however,while the language is still being used,it is observed that the pattern is declining. one factor contributing to this is due to the influence of the malay language in javanese community. malay language,which serves as malaysia national and official language has influenced the javanese society to enable more use of the malay language in everyday lives. most of the third-generation of javanese community in malaysia does not use javanese language in their verbal interactions anymore. they prefer to use languages other than the javanese language. the emergence of social media has created a new platform for communication among this third generation to use javanese language. with the emergence of new media,the communication process has also changed. the use of social apps such as whatsapp has changed the communication landscape by giving them more space to speak in their native language (javanese). this study found that javanese language in social media is used more frequently in conversation and sometimes alternated with the use of languages other than javanese language. respondents are observed to be practicing both languages and that it was common in the javanese language to be used interchangeably with the malay language. in addition,there is also codeswitching from malay to english and arabic observed. the use of social media and apps as communication medium such as what apps,is seen to help increase and preserve the javanese language especially in the young generation. © 2015,jurnal komunikasi malaysian journal of communication. all rights reserved.
