The framing of news on the border of camar bulan and tanjung datu,west kalimantan [Pembingkaian berita persempadanan camar bulan dan tanjung datu,kalimantan barat]

This study attempted to look at the on line news in kompas. com and utusan online on news slant,news framing,and the factors that influence the framing process on the border issue between camar bulan and tanjung datu. qualitative content analysis and indepth interview were used to achieve the purpose of this research. the four framing functions based on the model forwarded by entman (1993),namely,problem definition,causal interpretation,moral evaluation,and treatment recommendation were discretely carefully analysed. research results from kompas. com revealed news that are dynamic,contemporary edging towards war journalism as opposed to peace and neutral while utusan online has the attributes of normative,traditional and neutral as opposed to war. in the framing process kompas.com and utusan online stand on nationalism as the most vital element in constructing news framing on border. the framing factor on the news on border as reported by kompas.com and utusan online is influenced by internal factors which include news value,nationalism,meaningful reporting practice,media agenda setting,media control,media ownership the philosophy and basic media,the reaction towards foreign media and the reporter’s individual understanding. external factors include reading interest,media system,the norms and journalism method,the history of indonesia- malaysia,commercialization,propaganda and interest group,anti- malaysia sentiments,foreign news agency,and interest of the people and nation and internal politics. this research contributes to the existence of nationalism as a vital element in news reporting that involves the nation. nationalism becomes the main element in both moral evaluation and influence factor. it is concluded here that nationalism plays a crucial role in the news reporting about the shared borders of indonesia and malaysia. although journalism ethics advocates objectivity,reporter’s subjectivity is still involved in news that involves a nation. subjectivity comes in the form of nationalism. © 2015,jurnal komunikasi malaysian journal of communication. all rights reserved.
