This is a semantic and the malay mind study which focuses on the four basic senses of tastes that include sour, salty, sweet and bitter in malay proverbs. this study explicates the implicit and the implicit complex meaning of figurative language, especially proverbs and its association with the malay mind. the data are collected from three dictionaries which are kamus istimewa peribahasa melayu, kamus simpulan bahasa, kamus peribahasa melayu and it is also supported by the data obtained from the database corpus of pangkalan korpus dewan bahasa dan pustaka (dbp) and malay concordance project (mcp). this qualitative research applies the theory of semantics with inquisitive method that combine data, theory, cognitive and philosophy that eventually leads to the interpretation of the malay mind. the bridging cross-reference analysis approach is performed in the sense of tastes data in the malay proverbs. subsequently, inquisitive method is carried out to explicate the exact meaning that was intended to be conveyed. the results show that the malay proverbs are closely related with the malay culture as well as the malay mind. the implicit meaning of sour, sweet, salty and bitter, along with the associated meaning are linked to the speaker's mind. categorization according to the meanings also proves that figurative based on the sense of tastes do not merely illustrate the definition of sense but they also provide other peripheral meanings. based on the approach used, research on the malay proverbs proves the relationship between language, society and thoughts. © 2016,universiti kebangsaan malaysia press. all rights reserved.
