Intercultural adaptation of Nigerian students in Malaysia [Adaptasi antarabudaya pelajar Nigeria di Malaysia]

There has been a steady increase of international students in malaysia is increasing year by year especially with the national education blueprint that has emphasizes on the global prominence of malaysia as an international education hub. however,there are some challenges in the adaptation process faced by international students. using the u curve model,this study explains the adaptation experienceof nigerian students in malaysia especially in overcoming challenges of media stereotypes and the perspectives of malaysian. an in-depth interview research was conducted on six nigerian students studying in a public university. a main finding from this research is that the students do not go through a honeymoon period but more of a preparatory stage of adaptation. the nigerian students have shown to be very extensive in preparing themselves prior to coming to malaysia to avoid any problems of adaptation. nigerian students seem to be very focus in the reason the came to malaysia which is for education and is not affected with the stereotype from society. © 2016,universiti kebangsaan malaysia press. all rights reserved.
